A male southern masked weaver (Ploceus velatus)
A common species of weaver birds from southern Africa. This male is hard at work building a nest - they'll sometimes build 25 of them in a season! I based this off a photo that I took at the Woodland Park Zoo last spring. This guy was so fascinating to watch!
I really feel like my pen and ink skills are lacking. I just haven't had enough practice with the medium. In fact, I haven't done one since my sole art class in college - 7 years ago. Soooo, I decided it was time to do another! I loooooved doing the nest. The detail was infuriatingly intricate, but something to be proud of! Then I think I screwed it up when I did the bird itself, and made him way too dark. Blaaah, lesson learned! Critiques definitely welcomed here - I need to improve!
